Tom's Parrot Care Pages

These pages began several years ago (in 2002) as a place where I hoarded links and information about parrots that I found on the internet. and Then I wrote some things of my own.

A random note: The importation of wild birds (legal importation) was stopped in 1992 with passage of the Wild Bird Conservation Act of 1992. (This means that one of my birds, which once had a USDA import band, is at least 32 years old as of 2024).

Now I have decided that I would like to make the world a better place, in particular for parrots! And I thought that I might be able to do this by putting information right here that would help people take better care of their pet birds, so here we go:

If people would just do the following things, the parrots in their care would lead far better lives:

• Feed them well. Seeds won't do, they need high quality bird pellets and lots of fresh vegetables and fruit.
• Give them a big home. They need the biggest cage you can make room for, made of safe material, and with bars spaced appropriately for their size.
• Give them friends. Nothing is sadder than an intelligent parrot alone in a house with no person or bird to be a friend. A bird friend for a bird is wonderful, even if it doesn't live in the same cage.
• Give them love and commitment. Forgive them when they bite. Put up with their mess and noise. Stick with them for the long haul.
• Give them quality medical care. Find a vet that specializes in birds in your area, and take them once a year for an exam and bloodwork.
• Get rid of your non-stick cookware. It kills birds! Just say no!! Read more at this link
