Tom,
To follow up from our discussion, here are all of my custom function settings. You'll find the ones in there to convert your camera to the back-button-focus and ring-of-fire.
Back Button Focus:
The big benefit of this function is to separate AF from AEL. If you use
AEL, it remains as the half press of the shutter button. By placing the
focus button on the back, you can press to focus and then shoot at the
decisive moment. If it remains on the shutter button, you have to always
wait for it to achieve focus before shooting. So, you may be in focus, but
may have missed the decisive moment. I will routinely repeatedly hit the
back button and hear beep, beep, beep, beep and shoot the shot.
Ring of Fire:
The rear wheel gets retested to ONLY choose the focus point. The exposure
setting that was originally assigned to it (f stop of shutter speed) is now
assigned to the front wheel WHILE PRESSING THE HOLDING one of the rear
buttons under your thumb. So, BOTH your aperture and shutter speed are
controlled by the front wheel. One is a simple spin of the dial. The other
is done while holding one of the rear buttons in while spinning.
The read dial will cycle around nine focus points that form an oval shape in
the viewfinder. The benefit is that you can change from landscape to
portrait orientation of the camera dn spin the rear wheel and select a focus
point on a critical area of your scene in milliseconds.
Example of using both assets:
It is your wife's birthday and you want to shoot a few pictures of her. You want to shoot both landscape and portrait orientation shots of her. 1. You set your exposure using ISO and BOTH f/stop and shutter speed under the front dial (hold one of the rear buttons for one of them remember). 2. Once exposure is right, frame shot 3. Spin rear dial, drop closest AF point on her eye 4. Press back button focus repeatedly to keep her in focus in case you or her are swaying or moving 5. Press shutter button exactly when she has the perfect smile. I highly recommend those changes. It may take a little reconditioning, but it is well worth it and you will wonder how you ever did it differently.
