Netgear MR814

August 4, 2013

This is a nice little home router and wireless access point.

It is pretty obsolete by todays standards. I have been using it as a router while getting my WRT54G going. It works fine as a router (but I have some concerns that it could be a bottleneck).

The first big drawback is that it only does 802.11b (11 Mbit/s). This is not a showstopper, but it isn't good.

The second and bigger drawback is that it does only WEP, no WPA. First of all, WEP is known to be faulty (this was known back in 2003 or so). Second is that the setup for WEP is entirely different from WPA. With WPA, I set a passphrase on my access point, set the same passphrase on my clients, and away we go. WEP
