Android Operating System Overview
The Android Operating System has been developed by Google and
is used on portable devices such as cell phones and tablets.
At the heart of Android is a linux kernel
(typically 2.6 as this is written - in 2011)
running on an ARM processor.
History
The first release of Android was 1.0 Beta in November of 2007.

I am entering the Android world in December of 2011 with the Motorola Xoom.
When I first got it, it was running Android 3.2, but now (5/2012) it has been
updated a couple of times and is running Android 4.0.4
